Chapter 9

Hernon

“And I smelled it again when we were out on the ridge,” Silas says. “The scent was faint. He knew enough to keep downwind, but the odor of wolf was unmistakable.”

I'm sprawled out on the slick leather sofa in Silas’s office with the other clan officers discussing the recent wolf shifter sightings in the area and trying not to let on that the whole thing's got me more skittish than a turkey in November.

If those whiny mongrels get anywhere near my Louise...well, let's just say things will get ugly.

“There was a report of another sighting near town again today,” Xandros informs us.

Uh-oh, that ain't good.

While not exactly our sworn enemy, the wolf pack of nearby Timbercrest Village is not on our Christmas card list either.

Scentings and sightings can mean trouble.

Straightening up, I'm all business now. “Do you think the wolf pack is planning something? An attack, maybe?”

The thought of Lou in any danger turns my stomach.

Silas massages his forehead. “I don’t know. But we can’t take any chances, especially not with human females in town.”

Lake nods. “We have to protect the females.”

“The council won’t be happy if anything goes wrong with their fledgling program, either,” Waylon pipes up.

I can't think of any legitimate reason a wolf or group of them would come anywhere near Mystic Hollow unless they’re up to no good.

Silas puts us on all on high alert, asking us to keep our eyes and ears open. Damn straight I will.

As the meeting wraps with a nod from our Alpha, and we file out of the room, we’re all a bit edgy—wearing game faces and stiff shoulders—ready to guard our own town.

I’m more concerned with guarding Lou. It was mildly comical when the feisty woman kicked me out of Mama’s Den, but it’s not so funny right now. I need to stick close to keep her safe. How do I convince the most stubborn, infuriating, sexy-as-hell woman I've ever met that having me around is a good thing? I need a plan.

I pull out my phone and call one person I can always count on. Mom.

"Hernon." There’s a smile in her voice when she answers. "To what do I owe the pleasure?"

“I’ve got some good news, Ma.” I clear my throat. "I found…uh…I found my fated mate." Fated mate. It’s the first time I’ve allowed myself to admit it, much less spoken it aloud, and I grin stupidly even though she can't see me.

There’s a long moment of silence before my mother squeals so loud I have to pull the phone away from my ear so it doesn’t blow out my eardrum. “Praise the Moon! Tell me everything, don't leave out a single detail."

I give her the highlights, finishing with, "So there's just one little problem..."

"Well, Hernon, you know what I always say. When life gives you lemo—"

I cut her off before she can finish. "Yeah, yeah, make lemonade. Which is exactly why I called."

Mom, bless her heart, laughs. "Let me guess. This gal didn't go running straight into your open arms?"

I let out a labored breath.
